What is JARC varieties?

JARC varieties are coffee varieties developed by the Jimma Agricultural Research Centre (JARC) in Ethiopia. JARC varieties are a type of Ethiopian heirloom coffee, which are coffee varieties that are typically classified into two groups: JARC varieties and regional landraces

JARC varieties were developed in the 1960s and 1970s through selective breeding to improve coffee yields and disease resistance. They are known for their high-quality cupping scores and have become increasingly popular among specialty coffee roasters. JARC improved varieties are referred to numerically with attractive names like 74110 and 74114.

Regional landraces are coffee trees that grow completely in the wild, and there are an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 heirloom varieties in Ethiopia.
