Meet Ethiopia Guji Uraga G1 a washed single-origin coffee grown high in the mountains of Ethiopia’s renowned Guji region.
With notes of stone fruit, bergamot and brown sugar, it’s an elegant, vibrant coffee with plenty to discover in every cup.
From Guji, Ethiopia
Ethiopia is widely celebrated for producing some of the world’s most distinctive coffees, and the Guji region has developed an especially strong reputation for quality and complex flavour profiles.
Our Ethiopia Guji comes from Uraga, where smallholder farmers grow traditional Ethiopian heirloom coffee varieties at elevations between 1,950 and 2,300 metres.
Those high growing elevations, combined with the region and careful processing, help create the bright, elegant character you'll find in the cup.
What does Ethiopia Guji taste like?
This is a coffee for anyone who enjoys a little more brightness and complexity in their espresso.
You’ll first notice juicy stone fruit, followed by fragrant bergamot and citrus, all balanced by a smooth brown sugar sweetness.
The result is vibrant without being overpowering a beautifully balanced coffee where sweetness, acidity and fruit work together.
Expect:
Stone Fruit • Bergamot • Brown Sugar
What does 'washed' coffee mean?
You'll often see words like washed, natural and honey on specialty coffee bags. These describe how the coffee cherry is processed after being picked.
Ethiopia Guji uses the washed process, where the fruit surrounding the coffee seed is removed before the beans are dried.
Washed coffees are often loved for their clarity, allowing the natural characteristics of the coffee and its origin to really shine through.
In Ethiopia Guji, that means those beautiful stone fruit, citrus and bergamot notes can take centre stage.
How we recommend brewing it
For espresso, our recommended starting recipe is:
Dose: 20–21g
Yield: 38–42g
Extraction: 25–28 seconds
Of course, every machine and grinder is a little different, so use this as your starting point and adjust from there.
If you're using the coffee with an alternative brewing method, try using slightly less water, a little more coffee, a slightly coarser grind and a lower water temperature. These adjustments can help bring out more balance, sweetness and clarity.
Why try a single origin?
One of the best things about drinking single-origin coffee is getting to experience what makes coffee from a particular region unique.
Rather than blending beans from several origins to create a particular flavour profile, a single origin gives you an opportunity to explore the characteristics of coffee from one place.
And Ethiopia Guji is a beautiful example.
Bright. Sweet. Aromatic. A little different from your everyday coffee and exactly the kind of coffee that reminds us why we love roasting and drinking single origins.
